We also visited the hominid footprints and the trip to Engare Sero waterfalls. We went on a walking safari to see a group of 20 giraffes under acacia trees and this was wonderful seeing them close up and from the ground, as opposed to a jeep. It was amazing to get closer to these birds before they flew off in their hundreds, a sight to see. We were guided up a big boulder to get a first close up view of these birds who were in the midst of the mating dance. All activities were arranged with Lanjoo, who planned the days itinerary and over the next 3 days, he took us to see the flamingos at the edge of the lake, venturing further towards a breeding colony which was a little further away.

the meals were all fresh, healthy and delicious. The mess tent was a short walk away and was open sided and a great place to enjoy meals and relax and watch the many birds, zebra and wildebeest within a few metres. One negative point was that the tents were extremely noisy, due to the howling wind throughtout the night. The camp is situated at the edge of Lake Natron and the tents were private, spacious and well appointed with flush toilets and separate shower. On the last day of the trek after hiking on the Great Rift Valley ridges, we had to hike down a very steep escarpment to get down to ground level where we were met by our guide Lanjoo, who was a welcome sight after the strenous hike, and promptly took my rucksack and gave me water and that was the start of a fantastic 3 days at Lake Natron camp. We were able to experience day to day lives of these intriguinging tribe, walking through their villages, dancing and singing with them and being in the midst of herds of cows and sheep as we went.

We had an absolutely amazing time finally arriving at Lake Natron camp after hiking for 2 days from Empakai crater, going through pristine Masai villages.
